I'm in the path for totality which will occur in about 20 minutes.

It is an impressive sight; or lack thereof!

20 years ago there was a 98% eclipse of the sun (here where I live). I expected "night", but all I got was a somewhat grayish image of the world. Not too impressive. Maybe total (i.e. 100%) eclipse really *is* something much different, but - honestly - I don't think so.

Was it this one?

If so, where I live in the UK it was 97%. I too was amazed at the difference that 3% makes! The sky barely darkened!

I'm just glad the world didn't end as some predicted.

Don't hold your breath. Trump still has the nuclear codes.

Yes, that's the one. I found a photo in my album, taken on Aug 11 1999. It shows our backyard with a note that it doesn't look that bad because of me or the camera, but the solar eclipse.

I took some pictures , but they are lousy.

We got 2+ minutes of totality. It was eerily quite & dark. Not as dark as night, but it was almost night.
We watched totality occur through "eclipse" glasses, & then it just went DARK.
I took of my glasses & the corona was SPECTACULAR!
It seemed like all vehicle traffic stopped & everyone pulled over to watch.

As soon as the first spec of the Sun became visible, IMMEDIATELY is was way to Bright to look at without the eclipse glasses.
Even with only 5% of the Sun exposed again, it was almost a bright as normal daytime.

This was my second total eclipse.
My first was may 7, 1970

Hopefully this won't be my last one

I remember seeing a total lunar eclipse. This was, I thought, more dramatic than a solar eclipse: the moon becomes a weird orange colour. The event I saw was when the moon was only just above the horizon, so it looked huge.

The colour has a lot of physics behind it.
